How Publishing Works

When a composition is recorded and released, there are two separate copyrights involved: the composition itself, and the sound recording. A publisher’s role is to manage the copyright in the composition.

That copyright generates two types of royalties:

• Performance royalties – earned when a composition is broadcast or performed publicly
• Mechanical royalties – earned per unit when a composition is sold physically (vinyl, CD) or as a digital download or stream

Performance royalties are split into a writer’s share and a publisher’s share, usually 50/50, and collection societies around the world track and pay these out separately. Writers are normally affiliated with one collection society; publishers, like us, hold direct affiliations with multiple societies internationally.
